Maxwell Schmitz of DI & LTC brings up a topic of interest to Forty-Niner Fans (if are any left after Jed York) on why Colin Kaepernick not playing. The reason, as has been speculated in many places is that if Kaepernick is injured, then the 49ers will owe him several million dollars. This reinforces the importance of having disability income insurance. If you are disabled, how you will earn income? Keep in mind that the odds of a disability are high: 3 in 10 workers entering the workforce today will become disabled for some period of time before they retire (Social Security Administration, Fact Sheet, January 31, 2007):
Today I read a story that predicted Colin Kaepernick will once again become the starting quarterback for the San Francisco 49ers. The author hypothesizes that head coach Chip Kelly is simply waiting for Kaepernick to fully heal from his three offseason surgeries. In doing so, they allow Kaepernick to come back stronger, lessening the likelihood that Kaepernick re-injures his ailing shoulder, thumb, or knee.
The 49ers have a financial interest in ensuring that Kaepernick makes it safely through the season. A major injury would invoke the guaranteed money on Kaepernick’s contract, signed back in the Harbaugh era (which now feels like eons ago to the 49er Faithful).
Football players, despite their reputation, are smart enough to know the risks of career-ending injuries and illnesses. The best of the best are able to negotiate guaranteed money in the wake of a major health concern. Yet the millions of us who work outside the NFL will also fall victim to disabling illnesses or injury. Where is your guaranteed money? DI is the solution.
